Four hikers in helmets and crampons walk in a line across the glacier, the first with an ice axe

What to pack for Iceland

Layers, waterproofs and swimwear. The full list for summer and winter.

Layers, not one thick coat

In Iceland the weather changes several times a day. Three layers work best: a base layer, a warm middle layer (wool or fleece) and a waterproof, windproof jacket on top.

  • a base layer (wool or synthetic, not cotton)
  • a wool jumper or fleece
  • a waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers
  • a hat, gloves and a scarf, even in summer

Shoes

You need waterproof hiking boots that support the ankle and are already worn in. In winter we give you spikes for them, and crampons on the glacier walk.

What many people forget

Swimwear, because the hot pools are open all year. An eye mask in summer, because it is light at night.

  • swimwear and a quick-dry towel
  • sunglasses, because ice and snow glare
  • a water bottle, the tap water is drinkable
  • a power bank
