A tall waterfall falls from a basalt cliff into a green, mossy valley, with a rainbow in the spray

South coast: waterfalls and black sand

Our longest day tour: to the village of Vík and back, with five stops.

  • 10–11 hours
  • 4–12 people

What is the day like?

We leave at 8 am and reach Seljalandsfoss two hours later. A path leads round behind the waterfall, so you need a rain jacket. Next comes the 60-metre Skógafoss.

In the afternoon we see the rock arch of Dyrhólaey and the black sand of Reynisfjara, then have lunch in Vík. We are back in Reykjavík at about 7 pm.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Seljalandsfoss: behind the waterfall

The path runs round behind the falling water. In winter, when it is icy, we only look from the front.

  2. Skógafoss: steps to the top

Beside the 60-metre waterfall, steps lead up to a viewpoint. On sunny days there is a rainbow in the spray.

  3. Dyrhólaey: rock arch and lighthouse

From the headland you see the black coast and the arch in the sea. In summer puffins often sit in the grass.

  4. Reynisfjara: black sand, basalt columns

A wall of basalt columns and rock stacks in the water. The waves are dangerous here, so we keep away from the water.

  5. Vík: lunch at the end of the coast

A small village under the hill with a white church. We have lunch here before turning back.

Good to know before you come

  • How dangerous is Reynisfjara?

Sudden big waves come up the beach and can sweep people away. We always stay at least 30 metres from the water.

  • Will we get wet?

Behind Seljalandsfoss, yes. You need a waterproof jacket and trousers, or we lend you rain trousers.

  • Is there time to eat?

We have an hour for lunch in Vík. We also stop at a petrol station for coffee on the way.

What to bring

  • a waterproof jacket and trousers
  • hiking shoes
  • spare socks
  • a bank card for lunch

In strong wind

The wind is often strong on the south coast. If the authorities close the road or the beach, we change the order of the stops or suggest a new day.

  • It rained all day and we got soaked behind Seljalandsfoss. That was the weather, not the tour. The borrowed rain trousers helped a lot, and at Reynisfjara Dóra kept an eye on the waves all the time.

  • In January, with short days, but Levente planned the time so that we were still in Vík in daylight. Skógafoss with ice was beautiful.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

Can we bring children?

Yes, but it is a long day. Under six we suggest the Golden Circle instead.

Will we see puffins?

From May to August there is a good chance, at Dyrhólaey. In winter they are not here.
