Route 1

Route 1 runs about 1,300 kilometres around the island and is paved all the way. Most of it has one lane each way and no hard shoulder.

Only stop in marked parking areas. Stopping at the roadside for photos is dangerous and causes many accidents.

Rules

The speed limit is 90 km/h on paved roads, 80 km/h on gravel and 50 km/h in towns. Headlights are required in daytime too.

  • at a single-lane bridge, whoever arrives first goes first
  • in summer, sheep graze beside and on the road
  • driving off the road is forbidden
  • highland F-roads only with four-wheel drive, in summer
