A two-step waterfall in a canyon, with a rainbow over the spray

Golden Circle: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss

A day on the south-west loop in a small group, with plenty of time at every stop.

  • 8 hours
  • 4–12 people

What is the day like?

We start at your hotel in the morning, and by half past eight we are walking in Þingvellir National Park, in the rift between two plates. From there we go to Laugarvatn by the lake for lunch.

In the afternoon comes the Geysir field, where Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes, then Gullfoss. On the way back we stop at the Kerið crater and arrive at about 5 pm.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Þingvellir: a walk in the rift

This is where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart. We walk for half an hour between the walls of Almannagjá.

  2. Laugarvatn: lunch by the lake

A small village on the lake shore with hot springs. We have lunch here.

  3. Geysir: Strokkur erupting

Strokkur shoots up its water every 5–10 minutes. We spend an hour on the steaming field.

  4. Gullfoss: two steps into the canyon

The Hvítá river falls in two steps into a canyon 32 metres deep. On sunny days a rainbow stands over the spray.

  5. Kerið: the red crater

A crater with red walls and a blue lake at the bottom. You can walk around the rim.

Good to know before you come

  • How much walking is there?

3–4 kilometres in all, mostly on level paths. At Gullfoss steps lead down to the upper viewpoint.

  • Summer or winter?

Both are beautiful. In winter the paths can be icy, so we give you spikes for your shoes.

  • Can we bathe?

If you ask, we stop at a hot pool before driving back. You pay the entry there.

What to bring

  • a waterproof jacket
  • comfortable shoes with grip
  • layers
  • sunglasses, because water and snow glare

In winter

In December there are only 4–5 hours of daylight. Then we start later and wait for the sunset at Gullfoss.

  • Dóra guided the whole day in German, although half the group was Hungarian. We had an hour at Geysir and saw four eruptions. We would never have found the lunch place by the lake ourselves.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

  • I had never been on a glacier and was nervous about the crampons. The glacier guide was patient and Dóra walked beside us the whole way. The blue ice in the crevasses looks better than in any photo.
