Northern lights near Reykjavík

An evening tour in a small group: we go where the clouds are thinnest that night.

  • 4–5 hours, evening
  • 4–12 people

What is the day like?

At about 4 pm we check the cloud map and the aurora forecast and decide where to go. If there is no chance that night, we tell you in the afternoon and move the tour to another evening.

We leave at about 9 pm. After half an hour to an hour of driving we stop in a dark place and wait. Meanwhile we drink hot chocolate and help you set up your phone or camera.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Reykjavík: evening start

We pick you up at your hotel or the nearest bus stop.

  2. Mosfellsheiði: the first dark spot

There is no city light on the heath. If the sky is clear here, we stay.

  3. Þingvellir: above the lake

If the west is cloudy, we drive on to the national park, where the sky opens above the lake.

Good to know before you come

  • Will we surely see the lights?

No, nobody can promise that. We go where the chance is best, and if no lights come, you can join again on another evening of the same trip.

  • When are we back?

Between midnight and 2 am, depending on how long we wait for the lights.

  • Who is it for?

Anyone who can take the cold. With children we suggest it from age 6, because we come back late.

What to bring

  • warm layers
  • a hat, a scarf and gloves
  • warm waterproof shoes
  • a charged phone or camera and a power bank

If the sky is cloudy

We decide at 4 pm. If the whole south-west is cloudy, we move the tour to another evening or give you the price back.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

  • It was minus eight, but in the borrowed overalls we were not cold. We waited two hours, then suddenly the sky began to dance. The hot chocolate was welcome too.

  • Dóra guided the whole day in German, although half the group was Hungarian. We had an hour at Geysir and saw four eruptions. We would never have found the lunch place by the lake ourselves.

Questions and answers

Not finding your answer? Write to us, or see all questions.

Can you see the lights from the city?

When they are strong, yes, but the city lights drown out the fainter ones. That is why we drive out.

Will my phone do for photos?

Most phones today take good photos in night mode. We lend you a tripod and show you the settings.

Tell us when you are coming, and we will plan your days

Tell us when you will be in Iceland, how many you are and what interests you. We check the free days and send a suggestion with a route and a price. You only book once you like the offer.
