Steaming mud pools and orange and white ground in a geothermal area

Reykjanes: lava, steam and the bridge between continents

A short tour you can do on your arrival or departure day: we can also pick you up at the airport.

  • 6 hours
  • 2–12 people

What is the day like?

From Reykjavík we head south past Kleifarvatn lake to the steaming ground of Seltún. We walk on boardwalks between bubbling mud and the orange hillside.

Then comes the western tip of the peninsula: the footbridge between the two plates, the lighthouse and the steam cloud of Gunnuhver. If you like, we drop you at a hot pool or the airport at the end.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Kleifarvatn: a lake in the lava field

A dark sandy shore with lava hills all around. The first photo stop.

  2. Seltún: steam and mud

We walk on boardwalks between bubbling mud pools. It smells of sulphur, but it is worth it.

  3. The bridge between continents

A footbridge over a fissure where the two plates pull apart.

  4. Gunnuhver and the lighthouse

One of Iceland’s largest mud pools, with the old lighthouse on the hill beside it.

Good to know before you come

  • What if the volcano erupts?

There have been several eruptions on the peninsula since 2021. We always follow the closures of the civil protection and take another route if needed. We only watch an eruption from where the authorities allow.

  • What about my suitcase?

With us, in the back of the minibus. At the end we take you to your hotel or the airport.

  • Who is it for?

Anyone here for a short stay or flying home late in the afternoon. It is easy with children, as there is little walking.

What to bring

  • a windproof jacket
  • comfortable shoes
  • swimwear, if you want to bathe at the end

In wind and rain

The peninsula is open and windy. In bad weather we make the walks shorter and spend more time on the bus between stops.

  • They met us at the airport after landing and the suitcase stayed in the bus. The bridge between continents and the steam of Seltún were a good start, and in the evening they dropped us at the hotel.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

  • Dóra guided the whole day in German, although half the group was Hungarian. We had an hour at Geysir and saw four eruptions. We would never have found the lunch place by the lake ourselves.
