Green northern lights above snowy mountains, reflected in a lake

Northern lights: when and where to see them

When the season is, what to watch on the forecast, and how to photograph them with your phone.

4 min read

When is the season?

From early September to mid-April, when the nights are dark enough. There are northern lights in summer too, but you cannot see them in the light sky.

The best chance is between 9 pm and 2 am. Around full moon the lights look fainter, but you can still see them in a clear sky.

What to check on the forecast

The most important thing is cloud. The Icelandic Met Office website (vedur.is) has an hourly cloud map and an aurora forecast.

The Kp index shows the strength from 0 to 9. In Iceland you can see lights from 2–3 if the sky is clear.

How to photograph them

Phone night modes give good photos today if the phone does not move. Put it on a tripod or a rock and turn off the flash.

  • on a camera: manual mode, 3–10 seconds, ISO 1600–3200
  • the widest aperture, manual focus at infinity
  • a spare battery in an inside pocket, because the cold drains it
