Four hikers in helmets and crampons walk in a line across the glacier, the first with an ice axe

Glacier walk on Sólheimajökull

Blue ice, crevasses and black bands of ash, with eight people at most.

  • 9 hours, 3 of them on the ice
  • 4–8 people

What is the day like?

After two and a half hours of driving we put on the gear in the Sólheimajökull car park. From there it is a twenty-minute walk to the edge of the ice, where we strap on the crampons.

On the ice the glacier guide goes first, Dóra or Levente stays with the group and explains everything in your language. On the way back we stop at Skógafoss.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  • Do you need to be fit?

  • Who leads on the ice?

Our partner, a certified glacier guide. Dóra or Levente stays with the group the whole time.

  • What shoes do you need?

Waterproof hiking boots that support the ankle and take crampons. If you have none, we lend you a pair; just tell us your size.

What to bring

  • hiking boots
  • a waterproof jacket and trousers
  • gloves and a hat
  • sunglasses, because the ice glares
  • a snack

In rain or wind

We go in the rain too. In strong wind or with a storm warning the glacier guide cancels; then we suggest a new day or give you the price back.

  • I had never been on a glacier and was nervous about the crampons. The glacier guide was patient and Dóra walked beside us the whole way. The blue ice in the crevasses looks better than in any photo.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

  • Dóra guided the whole day in German, although half the group was Hungarian. We had an hour at Geysir and saw four eruptions. We would never have found the lunch place by the lake ourselves.

Is it dangerous?

The glacier guide knows the ice and only goes where it is safe that day. Never go onto a glacier alone.
