A basalt arch with waves washing through it and a glacier volcano in the distance

Snæfellsnes in a day

The western peninsula in one day: sea, lava and the villages below the glacier.

  • 11–12 hours
  • 4–12 people

What is the day like?

After Borgarnes we follow the south side of the peninsula. At Ytri Tunga we look for seals, at Arnarstapi we walk the coastal path to the rock arch.

In the afternoon we round the tip of the peninsula below Snæfellsjökull, then drive along the north coast to Kirkjufell. We are back at about 8 pm.

Where we go

The weather and the roads decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Ytri Tunga: seals

A yellow sand beach where seals often lie on the rocks, mostly in summer.

  2. Arnarstapi: a walk to the arch

A half-hour walk above the basalt cliffs, past the nests of sea birds.

  3. Djúpalónssandur: black pebbles

A cove of shiny black pebbles with pieces of an old fishing boat wreck.

  4. Kirkjufell: the church mountain

We photograph the mountain from beside the small waterfall, above the village of Grundarfjörður.

Good to know before you come

  • Is it a long day?

Yes, about five hours of driving there and back, but we stop often on the peninsula.

  • Is winter worth it?

Yes, Kirkjufell under snow is beautiful. In December we make fewer stops, because it gets dark early.

  • Will we see puffins?

Rarely. If puffins matter most, we suggest the south coast tour in summer.

What to bring

  • a waterproof jacket
  • hiking shoes
  • binoculars, if you have them

In wind

The wind can be strong at the tip of the peninsula. Then we skip the steps down to Djúpalónssandur and look at the cove from the viewpoint.

  • We saw seven seals at Ytri Tunga, and at Kirkjufell the sun was still shining at ten in the evening. A long day, but there was time at every stop.

  • The first evening was cloudy, and Levente wrote in the afternoon that we should not go. The next day he took us above Þingvellir and the whole sky was green. Even my phone took good photos, because he showed me the settings.

  • Dóra guided the whole day in German, although half the group was Hungarian. We had an hour at Geysir and saw four eruptions. We would never have found the lunch place by the lake ourselves.
