The bell towers and domes of Pyrgos with vineyards below

Villages and wine

The inland villages and two family wineries, with a long village lunch.

  • 6 hours
  • 1–8 people
  • All year

What is the day like?

We drive you through the villages inside the island by minibus. On the way we tell you why the vines grow in basket shapes and why the wines taste of salt.

We visit two small family wineries where the owner shows you the cellar. Lunch is in a village taverna where locals eat too.

Where we go

The wind, the sea and the crowds decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Pyrgos, the highest village

Narrow lanes inside the old Venetian castle walls, with a view over the whole island from the top.

  2. Vineyards and the first winery

Assyrtiko vines trained into baskets on black volcanic soil, then a tasting in the cellar.

  3. Megalochori

Bell towers over the street, old wine merchants’ houses and a quiet square.

  4. Lunch and the second winery

Fava, tomato fritters and fresh fish, then sweet vinsanto in a smaller cellar.

Good to know before you come

  • Who drives?

We drive, so everyone can taste in peace.

  • I do not drink wine. Is it still for me?

Yes. The wineries also serve grape juice and local snacks, and the villages are worth it on their own.

  • With children?

Yes. You can ask for a child seat in the minibus. Children get grape juice instead of wine.

What to bring

  • comfortable shoes for the cobbled lanes
  • a hat and sun cream
  • a bag if you want to take wine home

All year

This tour runs in winter too. On a rainy day we spend more time in the cellars.

  • Two small wineries, and in both the owner poured for us. Eszter translated and showed us how the vines grow woven into baskets against the wind. There were eight of us and the minibus took us everywhere in comfort.

  • We do not drink much, so we asked for fewer tastings and more walking in Pyrgos. Everything went as agreed, and at the end we even got a fig pastry for the road.

  • Márk knew exactly which bay was out of the wind. At the warm spring there was hardly another boat, and the children jumped off the ladder all afternoon. Lunch on Thirasia was the best meal of our trip.
