The red cliff of Red Beach and the sea

Akrotiri and the south coast

A 3,600-year-old town, the cliffs of Red Beach and the sunset at the Akrotiri lighthouse.

What is the day like?

Akrotiri was buried by the ash of the great eruption, which is why its two-storey houses, stairs and streets still stand. Eszter walks you through the site and tells you what we know about the people who lived here.

Then we go to the Red Beach viewpoint, have dinner at a fish taverna and watch the sunset at the lighthouse.

Where we go

The wind, the sea and the crowds decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town

A covered site with wooden walkways, so it stays pleasant in the sun. We spend about an hour and a half here.

  2. The Red Beach viewpoint

The red and black cliff is easiest to see from above. The path down to the beach is often closed, so we stay on top.

  3. Dinner by the sea

A small fish taverna on the south coast, where you choose from the day’s catch.

  4. Sunset at the lighthouse

The Akrotiri cape is quieter than Oia, and from here you see the whole curve of the caldera.

  • At Akrotiri, Eszter knew more than the signs. She also took us to Red Beach and told us in advance where to go down and where not to. A calm day with a lot in it.

  • Márk knew exactly which bay was out of the wind. At the warm spring there was hardly another boat, and the children jumped off the ladder all afternoon. Lunch on Thirasia was the best meal of our trip.

  • We had seen the sunset in Oia before, in the crowd. From the boat it is different: quiet, a glass of wine, and Eszter explained why the cliffs have those colours. Our son has been reading about volcanoes ever since.

Questions and answers

Not finding your answer? Write to us, or see all questions.

Can it be combined with sailing?

Yes. The site in the morning, the sunset sail from Vlychada in the afternoon. The two are close.

Can we go down to Red Beach?

The path is often closed because of falling rocks. You can see the beach from the water on the caldera sail.
