The path along the caldera rim towards Skaros rock

Walking the caldera rim, Fira to Oia

From Fira to Oia along the top of the caldera, past viewpoints and chapels, with a coffee in Imerovigli.

  • 4–5 hours
  • 1–8 people
  • All year, early morning in summer

What is the day like?

We walk along the top of the rim all the way from Fira to Oia. Part of the path is paved, the middle stretch is a dirt track, and there are two longer climbs.

In summer we start at seven in the morning, because later there is no shade. We have lunch together in Oia, then you head back by taxi or bus.

Where we go

The wind, the sea and the crowds decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Fira and Firostefani

We start at the cathedral and walk along the rim, above the blue domes and the old port.

  2. Imerovigli and Skaros rock

The highest village on the rim. If you like, you can walk down onto the rock where a castle once stood.

  3. The middle stretch

A dirt track, chapels and empty hills. From here you see the caldera and the east coast at once.

  4. Arriving in Oia

We walk down into the village to the windmills and have lunch on a quiet terrace.

Good to know before you come

  • How hard is it?

Moderate: about 10 kilometres with two longer climbs. If you walk regularly, you will manage it easily.

  • Can it be shorter?

Yes. From Imerovigli to Oia it is about half the distance, and the best viewpoints stay in.

  • When not to go?

Summer noon is too hot, and strong wind makes the rim unpleasant. Then we suggest another day.

What to bring

  • well worn-in walking shoes or trainers
  • at least one and a half litres of water
  • a hat, sunglasses and sun cream

Heat and wind

There is hardly any shade on the path. In summer we start at seven; in spring and autumn nine is fine.

  • We walked the rim all the way from Fira to Oia, and Márk stopped at every chapel with a story. We set off at seven, so we arrived before the heat, and we had lunch together in Oia.

  • Márk knew exactly which bay was out of the wind. At the warm spring there was hardly another boat, and the children jumped off the ladder all afternoon. Lunch on Thirasia was the best meal of our trip.

  • We had seen the sunset in Oia before, in the crowd. From the boat it is different: quiet, a glass of wine, and Eszter explained why the cliffs have those colours. Our son has been reading about volcanoes ever since.
