Sunset from the bow of a sailing boat in the caldera

Sunset from the water

In a small group, also for people travelling alone: a swim, dinner on deck, and the sun setting behind the caldera.

  • 5 hours, afternoon and evening
  • Small group, up to 10 people
  • April to October

What is the day like?

We run this tour as a small group, so it suits couples and people travelling alone. There are never more than ten guests on deck.

We leave in the afternoon, swim at Red and White Beach, have dinner on deck and wait off the Akrotiri cape for the sun to go down.

Where we go

The wind, the sea and the crowds decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Leaving Vlychada

We leave the marina between pale pumice cliffs shaped by the wind.

  2. A swim at White Beach

Clear water, pale pebbles and shady cliffs. We hand out snorkel masks.

  3. Dinner on deck

Grilled fish or chicken, Greek salad and local wine. Vegetarian food on request.

  4. Sunset off the Akrotiri cape

We anchor below the lighthouse and watch the sun drop into the sea.

Good to know before you come

  • When do we leave?

We follow the time of the sunset: earlier in spring and autumn, later in summer.

  • Can I come alone?

Yes, that is why this tour is for a small group. If you want the whole boat, ask for the private version.

  • What do we eat?

Dinner is cooked on board. Tell us about allergies or vegetarian wishes beforehand.

What to bring

  • swimwear and a towel
  • sun cream and a hat
  • a jumper for the evening, the wind gets cool

If the wind blows

In strong wind we stay on the sheltered side. If it is not safe to sail, we suggest a new day.

  • We had seen the sunset in Oia before, in the crowd. From the boat it is different: quiet, a glass of wine, and Eszter explained why the cliffs have those colours. Our son has been reading about volcanoes ever since.

  • The proposal happened at the bow, while Márk stayed at the wheel. We wrote back and forth about the details for two weeks before, and every question got an answer.

  • Márk knew exactly which bay was out of the wind. At the warm spring there was hardly another boat, and the children jumped off the ladder all afternoon. Lunch on Thirasia was the best meal of our trip.

Questions and answers

Not finding your answer? Write to us, or see all questions.

Can we see the sunset if it is cloudy?

Clouds are rare in summer. If they hide the sun, the sail and the dinner stay the same.

Will I get seasick?

The south coast is usually calmer. If you are prone to it, ask a pharmacist for advice before the trip.
