A wooden sailing boat at anchor in the caldera below the red and black cliffs

Caldera sail to the volcano

Your own boat to the volcano and the warm spring, with a swim at White Beach and lunch in a fishing harbour.

  • 5 hours or a full day
  • 1–10 people
  • April to October

What is the day like?

Only your group is on board, so the route follows you. If you want to swim longer somewhere, we stay. If you would rather see the cliffs from the water, we move on.

We leave the south coast in the morning, round the Akrotiri cape and sail into the caldera to the volcano. The full-day version adds lunch on Thirasia and a sail back below Oia.

Where we go

The wind, the sea and the crowds decide the exact route. The map shows the usual one.

  1. Red and White Beach from the water

White Beach can only be reached by boat. The first swim is here, in clear, shallow water.

  2. Nea Kameni: a walk to the crater

We moor at the volcano island and walk up a stony path to the edge of the crater. About an hour there and back.

  3. Palea Kameni: the warm bay

The water of the bay is orange from iron and lukewarm. We jump in from the boat and swim there in a few minutes.

  4. Thirasia: lunch in Korfos

On the full-day tour we have lunch in a small fishing harbour. If you like, you can climb the steps to the village of Manolas.

  5. Back below Oia

On the way home we pass the cliffs of Oia and Ammoudi Bay before turning south.

  • Márk knew exactly which bay was out of the wind. At the warm spring there was hardly another boat, and the children jumped off the ladder all afternoon. Lunch on Thirasia was the best meal of our trip.

  • It was a windy day, so we only crossed to the volcano in the afternoon, but we had White Beach to ourselves. They had told us in advance what might change with the weather, so nothing surprised us.

  • We had seen the sunset in Oia before, in the crowd. From the boat it is different: quiet, a glass of wine, and Eszter explained why the cliffs have those colours. Our son has been reading about volcanoes ever since.
